“Cancer cells grow in an uncontrolled manner. One malignant cell becomes two, two become four, four become eight, and so on, until a mass of cells (a tumor) is created. The tumor interferes with the normal functioning of healthy tissue and can spread to other parts of your body.” (source)
Long before you are even aware of it’s presence, it exists. When you realize the breach in security, it might already be too late.
There are some who choose to join the opposition party, hoping to create change. Ti Lik, a former Young PAP turn Worker’s party, who was recently voted into the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the Worker’s Party had this to say: ”I realised that political competition is the best way to make the ruling party more sensitive to the needs of the people.” (via commentary singapore)
This is said, despite the fact that Opposition Parties currently hold only 2 of the 81 seats in Parliment, of which Chiam See Tong might not even be able to keep his at the next elections. The opposition is too small to provide the ‘political competition’. Change starts somewhere I guess, and I applaud them for wanting to make a difference.
“If you can’t beat them, join them.”
Roy Mustang in Full Metal Alchemist chose to rise through the ranks, and reach the top, where he could then advocate change. Getting to a position where he could create change was his source of motivation.
Sydney and Jack Bristow served as double agents in Alias - bringing down SD-6 was their driving force.
Or you could just create circumstances to be promoted into power, like Chancellor Palpatine in Star Wars, and then order your troops to do your dirty work, under the guise of an uprising.
With the state the opposition is in right now, I think they’re better off creating change from within the PAP itself. From cancer cells, much can be learnt.
“True change might come from within!”
Yeah yeah, I know it’s weird citing movies, anime and tv as examples. Shows you how much I watch. At least they can’t sue.
There is much we can learn from our modern day legends, myths and fairtales, because they are just like any other morality tale or parable.
I like the Roy Mustang reference… I’m an FMA otaku too

well they are all truths fictionized or immortalized anyhow :p
FMA’s a really well written series. Hope the two brothers meet one day.

The problem with the hope that true change comes from within is that there is no definite time frame to it. Of course, we must say, “Give time, it will surely come!” Then if change comes with time, then all we can do is wait.
Perhaps it is somewhat unfair to say that as it presumes we cannot effect change from within and without. But I just want to point out the possible fallacy in that hope.
Roy Mustang and Sydney are works of fiction unfortunately. And is SD 6 really that evil? hmmmm.
And might I add that your example of a tumour is a double edge analogy? Tumours can beign or malignant. Are changes of those nature necessarily good or do you mean to say that no matter the nature, any change from within is surely good?

It is interesting to know that many people “hope” change will be initiated “from within”. This is a myth and false hope PAP apologists keep humming at.
We must face the reality that there will be no incentives at all for those “inside” to change if there isn’t a pressure from outside.
The “state of opposition” is a total reflection on the population’s apologetic attitude and of course the FEAR factor.
To dream about “changing PAP from within” is worse than building castles in the air.

Besh of both worlds.. change from inside and outside.
hehe reformers within Pappies can point fingers at bold proposals from new political figures outside of Pappies and say ‘wahlan, we better catch up!’ to the Pappy old timers
Then other political parties see Pappies struggling to give out more goodies, point fingers at Pappies and say, ‘alamak, we better catch up!”
hehe Who benefits, we Sgporeans lor! Ehhh, something like current petrol price war when all try to outdo each other to gain market dominance. Not perfect coz if they undercut each other then all are screwed. But at least got move towards giving deals to the ppl because of the presence of competition. Of coz not so simple lah but something liddat.
